This
evening I began shooting the scene where Jimmy visits his biological father’s
grave at 16:15 and finished at 16:45. I began by taking a long shot image of
the graveyard, as seen below, as I thought it would set the scene nicely before
giving the audience an insight into a little part of Jimmy’s life.
I
then slightly adjusted the camera to the right and took pictures (still in a
long shot) of Oliver, playing Jimmy, walking down the path to his father’s
grave. I asked Oliver to look down at the floor as this symbolises he is upset/
heartbroken about something. From this the audience will be able to understand
that he is visiting someone who once meant a lot to him in his childhood.
I then took pictures
of Oliver beside the grave. I decided to take pictures from two different
angles, below are two diagrams showing the different angles.
I decided to do this as I wanted to ensure I had
a range of pictures to choose from otherwise I would feel restricted and may
result in a reshoot.
The next picture I took
was another long shot but this time Oliver was walking away from the camera. I believe
this picture will work well as it will finish that scene and introduce the next
scene easily.
Finally, I took a few pictures of the graves
in the crematorium. I believe these images can go in between the four main
images I decide to use. The four main images will be walking to the grave,
placing the flowers, praying and then walking away.
Problems in the shoot
One problem was Oliver’s outfit. In an initial
blog post you can see what I believe each character’s costume should look like.
Unfortunately, Oliver did not have any pieces of clothing which were similar to
my initial costume ideas for Jimmy’s casual clothing therefore he tried to wear
whatever he had which was best suited. Originally, we agreed he could wear
shorts, a casual top and a jacket where none of these were designer. However due
to the terrible weather conditions I allowed him to wear a coat and track suit
bottoms. This costume was still acceptable as it symbolises he has no clue of
fashion and is very adventurous.
Another
problem was the lighting of the pictures being taken. I used natural lighting in
this scene and wanted to promote pathetic fallacy therefore the lighting had be
somewhat dark and the weather had to be quite poor. When I looked over the developed
images I noticed that they were darker than the natural lighting not in the
pictures. To resolve this problem I used a torch on my phone and held in near
the lens in hope to make the images lighter. Luckily, this idea paid off.
