New Idea

Over the last few days I have been thinking about how I can make my opening title sequence better. I have decided to include short clips of each character completing tasks that symbolise the type of character they are.

Arthur (the geek) will be sat reading one of his revision books. He then gathers all of his books together and begins to walk towards the camera where he will then stop and sort out his glasses and tie. This is because the majority of my target audience said they associate revision, books, glasses and a smart uniform with a geeky character.

Jerome (the thug) will be slouched against the school gates with one leg rested up against a bar. He will be holding a cigarette in which he blows smoke to the camera then looks at the camera with a smug look on his face. This is because my target audience stated they associate smoking, alcohol and a selfish personality with a thuggish character.

Sadie (the pregnant teenager) will be seen looking down at her stomach whilst holding/ rubbing it and also smiling to herself. She will then look up to the camera smile then wink. This wink will symbolise the secrecy of the pregnancy. My target audience said they associate happiness, secrecy and holding their belly with a pregnant teenager.

Burdine (the snob) will be seen twirling and laughing to herself but as soon as she notices the camera she will stop and stand slightly away from the camera, smiling and playing with her hair. This is because my target audience said they associate flirtatious behaviour, designer items and happiness with a snobby character.

Maggie (Jimmy’s mother) will be seen tying her apron then she begins to brush the floor. Maggie then stops brushing to look at the camera. She then attempts to smile but the audiences will be able to see that she is not happy and is more afraid.

Blake (Jimmy’s stepfather) will be seen brushing off his shoulders as if to say he is better than anyone else and nobody can affect him. He then looks at the camera, pushes up his chest and fold his arms. This will show the audience he is prosperous and superior.

Jimmy (the main character/ gypsy boy) will be seen simply being himself. He will be wiping dirt off his uniform and trying to make himself look acceptable, to the audience this will symbolise Jimmy is trying to turn his life around since moving to Manchester and starting at Wellington School. However, it will be clear to that Jimmy still has a little bit of the gypsy culture within him. This will be shown by his throwing little punches.

The order of this will be:

1) Jimmy
2) Maggie
3) Blake
4) Jerome/ Burdine
5) Arthur
6) Sadie

Filming Update

Wednesday 29th October

Today I filmed the scene where the audiences first gain an understanding of Jimmy and Arthur’s friendship. The location of this scene is outside Wellington School so I agreed with both actors to meet at the front gates of the school at 12:30. I filmed a lot of footage between the time of 12:45 – 14:00 and the majority of these were over shoulder shots of Khabeer and Oliver sending text messages. My aim was to film Oliver and Khabeer typing the text message with the use of an over the shoulder shot, in this shot I made sure the actors side of their face so that the audience could distinguish the characters are different/ texting each other. I would then zoom in on the phone to show the text message. The text is very important as from what the text messages says the audience will be able to understand that the characters are friends and are both bully victims. This was made difficult as the camera I used (Fujifilm Finepix Z) continuously went out of focus making the image blurry and resulting in not being able to read what the text message says. This problem was created due to the characters hands shaking whilst typing the text message which to be fair is a natural occurrence. Although this was highly stressful after many attempts at filming this shot I finally managed to get a decent and clear film of the text message.

Footage showing the camera not focusing:

Another main problem of today was that the pavement was very uneven due to rocks and erosion this made the camera uneven resulting in the filming being slightly slanted. To resolve this problem I folded up paper I had spare and sellotaped it to the tripod leg which was making the footage slant.

Character Change

I have decided to change the actor of Blake (Jimmy’s stepfather). The initial actor was Conor Cooke but due to other commitments he is unable to attend shooting schedules available. As I spoke to each actor/ actress I created different shooting schedules meaning there were not many days on offer to Conor and unfortunately he is unable to attend any. The new actor who will play Blake is Michael Way. This works in my advantage as Sam has a bigger body build therefore the shadow effect will work much better.

Character Costumes

In order to complete this task I searched my house to find suitable clothing for each character. To help me I used the answers in which my target gave on one of my questionnaires. In this questionnaire I asked them to sketch an image of the characters wearing what they think the character would usually wear.

All of the clothing shown in the images are mine and my families clothes therefore some of the characters will not be wearing the exact same clothes shown in the images simply because of different sizes. However I believe this is a good idea, for example when discussing with the actor/actress what they should wear I will show them the image that applies to their character so they have an idea of the clothing they should wear.

Burdine:
The correct Wellington School uniform for the females is a long black suit skirt, a white shirt (with the top button done up), the Wellington School tie (down to the waistband of the skirt), a black school bag and finally minimum jewellery. However, due to Burdine’s deviant personality she imposes these rules and decided to style the uniform in her own fashionable way.

She wears unbelievably expensive jewellery, such as Michael Kors watches. On top of this she believes in matching colours therefore she always tries to match her designer bag colour with the colour of her belt, which is unacceptable in the eyes of her headteacher. It can certainly be said that Burdine likes to be unique and stand out from the rest.

Sadie:
Sadie values her place and Wellington School therefore accepts the uniform rules much more than her fellow pupil, Burdine. Although Sadie sometimes walks around with her top button undone and shirt poking out of her skirt she is generally seen as a star role model to younger pupils. Before she found out she was pregnant Sadie had much more confidence and used to push the boundaries by rolling her skirt up and wearing her tie a little shorter but now her whole appearance is near enough perfect.

Maggie:
Maggie’s fashion has drastically changed since she became a mother and lost her beloved husband. She used to be a vibrant and this was definitely shown through her outfits. Prior to these changes in her life she used to wear very bright and bold coloured dressed and skirts, the men used to worship the ground she walked on and women used to envy her but now she tends to wear very little bright clothing. Since meeting Blake she has become a stereotypical housewife resulting in Maggie making no effort to look nice as she always ends up dirty from cleaning, cooking and caring for Jimmy.

Blake:
Throughout his childhood he has witnessed his father work extremely hard for his money and knows that if he wants to provide for his new family (Maggie and Jimmy) then he has to follow in his father’s footsteps and work even harder. His numerous numbers of jobs are stereotypically very manly meaning he is constantly dirty, greasy and his clothes are stained.

Arthur:
Arthur is head boy, the leader of the prefects and is most definitely a perfect role model for the younger pupils. Whenever there is an after school event taking place teachers can rely on Arthur to volunteer to help when needed. Arthur has been brought up to respect everyone. His parents are very strict and expect the best from Arthur which has lead him to follow rules, meet deadlines and achieve the top grades. Again, like Sadie, he values his place at Wellington so follows every rule he can.

His uniform is more than perfect; he wears a clean and smart black suit that fits him just right, nicely polished shoes, his white shirt is radiant and his school tie is at the correct length.

 Jerome:
Jerome could not care less about the rules of Wellington School or in actual fact the law itself. His uniform is appalling but you have to give him some credit for sticking to the colour black. He wears black suit pants on some days but on other days where he isn’t feeling his best he decides to wear black tracksuit bottoms which comes with the excuse that ‘they are still black.’ His white shirt is constantly untucked; he wears black trainers which have a white Nike tick from front to back. His jewellery is all gold and no matter what he is doing he refuses to remove any piece of it he owns, especially when he is asked by his P.E teachers.

Jimmy:
Since Jimmy’s biological father passed away his mother has found it hard to look after him. Before he decided to leave his mother, he was always dirty and his clothes were very rarely washed. Since moving away his hygiene has improved but on his own he finds it hard to keep himself and clothes clean.

Outfit 1: uniform
Jimmy has very little money therefore the school have given him his uniform free of charge. Although Jimmy decided to leave his gypsy lifestyle, the way he wears his uniform shows that he still has some gypsy ways inside of him. He hates wearing his blazer as he feels as though it restricts him, he rolls up his sleeves, his teachers always have to do his tie for him and his shoes are very ragged looking with holes and marks all over them. But having said this it is still clear that Jimmy is trying his hardest to fit in and be liked.

Outfit 2: casual clothing
With Jimmy being at the age he is he has no clue about fashion. When we awakes in the morning he is more eager to go outside and explore than arrange a decent looking outfit therefore he throws on whatever his right and left hand land on first. His shoe laces are always untied with little knots all the way through them. From years of exploring and adventures his knees and elbows are grazed and scarred.

Filming Update 1

Tuesday 28th October

Today I filmed the school that Jimmy attends after his move to Manchester. I began filming at 13:00 and finished at 13:30. I filmed from a range of angles, for example a low angle of the sign and an eye-level view of the school. I then filmed a close up of the sign then zoomed out to an establishing shot so the audience will be able to see the whole school.

Considered Problems

Throughout the different scenes there many different problems I will face when filming.

Problems I have to consider
How I will resolve these problems

Due to the time going back an hour it had meant that sunset and nightfall is earlier, this means it goes dark earlier.

When Jimmy is at his father’s grave the gravestone will have a deceased person’s name written on.

I may not be able to film at a caravan park/ in a caravan. The traditional Gypsies are nomadic therefore they live in caravans. If I do not film in a caravan it may make the opening sequence less realistic.

Problems with the weather. At the moment the weather in Manchester is continuously raining.

Filming the final shot with all the characters. It may be difficult to find a day/ time where all of the characters and me are available.
I will have to film at specific times depending on the darkness I want each scene to be.
For example:
In the scene where Jimmy is at his father grave I want this to be dark therefore I will film later than the scene where Jimmy meet Jerome as I want this scene to be natural/ bright lighting.

I will speed to zoom up so the audiences do not get the opportunity to clearly see the name of the deceased.
Another option is that I want to film this when it is raining therefore the name won’t be as clear.

I will resolve this by getting an establishing shot of a caravan park but film in rooms that are in houses but I will ensure the footage does not contain images of brickwork.

I will constantly check the weather reports for the upcoming days and base the filming around that, for example if it is raining I will film the scenes where I want the weather to be dull or film the scenes which are inside.
The films I want to be filmed in poor weather (pathetic fallacy):
  • Jimmy visits his biological father’s grave
  • Jimmy and mother hugging (devastated)
  • Maggie and Blake’s relationship
  • Jimmy and Blake’s relationship
  • Jimmy leaving: when he looks back (dull) when he looks forward (establishing shot) it is going to be bright and natural lighting
I will resolve this by arranging a day/ times based on me then ask each character on whether this day/ time is ok with them. If it is not I will adapt to a day/ time where everyone is available.

Meet the Cast

After looking back over my questionnaires I have come to a final decision on who I want to feature in my opening title sequence. Below is a list of the characters, actors/ actresses and why I have decided to use them.

All of my decisions were based on how my target audience answered my questionnaire based on the characteristics of the different characters.

Jimmy: Oliver Harwood
I have decided to use Oliver as my main character firstly because acting as an individual from a different culture may be difficult but due to his strong acting skills I believe he would be perfect for this role. Additionally, I believe Oliver’s body image is similar to what I was hoping to find for Jimmy’s character. I wanted Jimmy to look small and fragile because through his early teenager years he was bullied by his stepfather and also Jerome when he finally attended school in Manchester.

Blake: Conor Cooke
For the role of Blake I have decided to use Conor Cooke mainly for his appearance. Although I was hoping to find someone older than the characters of Jimmy, Burdine, Jerome, Sadie and Arthur (as these characters are all at the age where they still attend school) Conor looks much older than is actual age and more specifically he looks much older than Oliver (playing Jimmy). As this role is Jimmy’s stepfather it would be okay to cast the role of Blake to Conor.  Furthermore Conor has long hair which I would be able to style in a way that Gypsy men do and also believe I could make him look rough.
His hair will be gelled back.

I wanted Blake’s character to look superior with a big body build otherwise the shadow affect I was hoping for wouldn’t work as well I wanted to therefore I may use another person, with a bigger build, to do this scene but I am yet to come to a final decision on this situation.

Jerome: George Graburn
Jerome is the bully of the programme therefore I wanted to find someone with a confident personality and a superior body image. This is how I came to the decision that George would be perfect for this role. George’s appearance looks as though nothing can harm him and everyone should fear him. However, he also portrays the idea that he has issues in his personal life which is why he acts the way he does to Jimmy and others in his school.

Arthur: Khabeer Phazeer
After analysing my participant’s answers on each questionnaire I have come to the conclusion that the character of Arthur has be innocent and caring. Nearly all of my participants said they associate glasses with a geek therefore the individual I choose will have to wear glasses or simply borrow someone’s when filming. Finally, I hoped Arthur would look weaker than most of the characters as generally bully victims look easy to be pushed around by other teenagers. This analysis has led to my friend, Khabeer, who I believe would suit this role perfectly.

Burdine: Holly Crick
After watching the film ‘Wild Child’ I have decided to base this character on Poopy Moore (played by Emma Roberts). This is because I want Burdine to hold the same characteristics/ personality traits as what Poppy Moore does in Wild Child. These include:
  • Spoilt teenager
  • Only thinks about herself – in the film Poppy gives away her father’s girlfriends belongings
  • Refuses to acknowledge authority (doesn’t listen to anyone)
Based on this I have decided to cast the role of Burdine to Holly. I have come to this decision because Holly holds the same appearance as what Poppy Moore does in Wild Child.

Sadie: Amber Grundy
Trying to find a teenage girl to take on the role of this character was difficult due to the maturity and situation of the character. However, over the last few days 3 girls have put themselves forward to play Sadie in my opening title sequence.

From these girls I decide that Amber best suited the role of Sadie. This is because Amber has good acting skills, for example she can non-verbally communicate her feelings across to the audience which is what is needed as there will be no/ little talking in my opening title sequence therefore the characters have to have decent acting skills to be able to draw the audience in and let them briefly understand the role of each character. Additionally, she is very mature which is also needed due to delicacy of the topic (teenage pregnancy).

I have managed to find actors for all male characters and also an actress for the character of Burdine and Sadie. However, I have been unsuccessful in finding actresses to play Maggie therefore during the week I have off school I will be filming the scenes that include the characters of Burdine, Sadie, Jimmy, Arthur, Jerome and Blake.

The next stage is to write a formal letter to each of the actors/ actresses to gain informed consent. When I have received the letters back I will then collect their contact details and arrange filming days and times that is suitable for them and me.

Tuesday 21st October
Over the past few days I have been working on gathering the contact details of all of my characters. This will help me to contact the actors/ actresses if I have important information for them or if some any reason there is a change of plans.

My next step is to individually speak to my actors/ actresses and arrange days and times that best suit us both.

Character Profiles

Jimmy:
Jimmy is an astonishing boy who appreciates everything he is given in life. He works hard to make friends and support his loving but senseless mother the best he can. His relationship with his mother and father was unbreakable until the day came where he had to say goodbye to his bestfriend, hero and father. Since this day he has craved his mother’s attention and love but he knows that by sticking around nothing will change and he will be left more emotionally hurt than he ever was.

Blake:
Simply, Blake is a traditional Romany gypsy man. Throughout his childhood he was taught the fight for survival way of life and told everything earned never comes easily or cheap. Blake finds it hard to see where the transition from childhood to adulthood began. His father would start fights with grown men then call Blake over to jump in and help. The guidance he received from his family was never the guidance a child should receive. This may explain his strong, authoritative and aggressive personality.

Maggie:
Maggie is a character who tries her best to please everyone, even if it means not pleasing herself. She adores her son Jimmy but she knows deep down he has got more potential in life than she ever had, and this may be the reason she let her son walk away from her so easily. When Maggie was younger she had a fight for life, she was the 20th Century Marilyn of Ireland who would have men worshipping the ground she walked on. However, her fight and care for herself vanished when the love of her life was beaten to death in a bare knuckle fight. Since this day Maggie has struggled to see a reason for living and never been able to show Jimmy the affection and support she knows he needs.

Jerome:
Throughout his years in education he has always been superior to other pupils, imposes attention he gains and takes advantage of anyone who attempts to be nice to him. Although he is greatly feared by the majority of pupils Jerome has many personal problems at home which may be why he takes his fury and sadness out on other innocent pupils.

Sadie:
Sadie had her head screwed on and knew what she wanted to gain from life. She worked extremely hard in school and was liked by many but this all changed when she found out she was pregnant. Luckily for her no one yet knows but she now faces an agonising decision with no guidance. Since she found out her personality has dramatically changed from being an extreme extrovert to a severe introvert.

Arthur:
This intellectual teenager knows what he wants from life and the direction he is going to take to reach his main goal. He keeps his mine focused on his schooling, friends and family. However, school life isn’t exactly the easiest for him. He is a popular candidate for bullying. All day, every day he victimised by Jerome and other pupils by threats, name calling and the worst, repeated bruising.

Burdine:
Burdine is a seemingly spoiled teenager who refuses to acknowledge any kind of authority. She makes a number of enemy’s everyday with her childish ways and atrocious attitude. However, it becomes clear that Burdine has a lot more to her than just her personality. Since the day her younger sister was diagnosed with a life threatening illness Burdine has struggled to cope with home and school life. Although she seems to be overly popular she still feels sadness, isolation and heartbreak.

At the moment I am focusing on gathering my cast. I have successfully got actors for the roles of Jimmy, Blake, Arthur and Jerome therefore I am currently asking certain females to be part of my cast however due to commitments and other reasons this is becoming a very difficult task to complete.

Analysis of the ‘Wolfblood’ opening title sequence

My written response
Is this a successful title sequence?

This supernatural/ fantasy British television series is based on certain teenagers’ struggles of living their double lives as wolfbloods and keeping their secret concealed from the outside world, including their closest friends. It was first premiered on its original channel, CBBC, on the 10th September 2012 and is currently still running due to its success. Since the 1st October 2013 Wolfblood has been premiered in America on the famous Disney Channel. It was created and written by Debbie Moon and was further developed by Foz Allan. The opening theme tune was composed by Andy Price and was named “A Promise That I Keep” although this is not stated in the title sequence, it symbolises the secrecy throughout the series.

In my opinion this opening title sequence is successful for many reasons.

To begin with non-diegetic music is played from the beginning of the sequence to the end. This soundtrack is very mystical but also can be conveyed as being horror due to the continuous saying of “rescue me”. There is also a major emphasis on this saying therefore the audiences may begin to ask questions on what the teenagers want to be rescued from. Furthermore this is also an example of an enigma code as the teenagers in the series may want to be rescued from their secret life and may crave to live a normal teenage life. Along with the upbeat music the use of quick cuts also creates a sense of urgency and danger to the series. This sense of danger and fast paced lives is also seen by the black images of wolves appearing constantly as the audience will know that wolves are known for their nomadic lives and strong impression.

From my own research I have found that a typical convention of many fictional texts uses their title sequence to give the audiences details about the names of actors/ actresses, the writer(s) and the director. This information can be provided in many different ways, for example in this case having the text appear in the bottom half of the image. On some occasions information on the cast and crew can also be provided. When watching this title sequence I expected it to state that they are partially produced by the CBBC as I believe this would be their unique selling point due to the success of the BBC who is the parent company of the CBBC and Cbeebies, after the CBBC split into the Cbeebies channel, for the younger children, and the CBBC channel.  The BBC is the oldest national broadcasting organisation and has media platforms such as TV, radio and online services. The success of the BBC is massive, for example the BBC Worldwide made a grand profit of £188 million (converting to a 16.2% profit rate) in 2009/2010.

The use of establishing shots allows the audiences to gain an understanding of the narrative and the characters personality/ characteristics. Firstly, the main setting of the title sequence is in a very dark rural area which suggests to the audience that there is something very mystical going on around the town. However, the sequence does give detail about the narrative by showing images of wolves and teenagers in the woods but does not suggest these teenagers actually live another life as these superior beasts. In reference to the characters each of them holds a different personality. For example one of the female characters are holding a camera to her eye which conveys her as being artistic and creative however as you can only see part of her face it also conveys her as living a secretive life altogether. Another example is that of a male character seen looking over his shoulder; this represents him as being anxious about a certain situation.

A convention of a teen drama is they are usually set in a school or at the characters houses. In the case of Wolfblood the main setting is the woods but some scenes are shot in the characters houses and this is where the audiences gain knowledge on the home lives of the characters, for example Rhydian has been raised unhappily in orphanages and foster homes. This helps the audience to distinguish the difference within characters. Another setting is the local school in Stoneybridge where Rhydian and Maddy first meet and learn about each other’s secrets.

Examples of some more conventions within Wolfblood
  • Costume – each character tends to wear normal, everyday clothes
  • Music – gets the feelings of the characters across à generally upbeat when the characters are in their wolf form to show their hectic and fast lives but also slow when secrets are being questioned
  • Superior teen – alpha male of the wolf pack ‘Alric’

As digital channels increase and competition for viewers become more intense, some modern UK programmes have decided to use some conventions from US television and are producing more sophisticated title sequences that are graphically interesting and engaging and in this is definitely the case in Wolfblood. The images look very sketchy and partially animated. This creation will gain audience’s attention as it is something unusual and not common within teenage dramas as they tend to be more realistic looking, for example Waterloo Road’s opening title sequence features real humans that feature within the drama

Although this series is very successful I unfortunately do not think I would watch the programme. This is because I believe the series is predominately aimed at male teenagers mainly because of the colour palette. Throughout the sequence there are only 3 colours used, these being blue, black and yellow. Stereotypically blue and darker colours tend to be seen as more masculine colours, especially blue which in this case the predominant colour is blue. Following on from this after carrying out some extra research on the narrative and the series as a whole I have come to the conclusion that it is very similar to the film Twilight (2008) as they also have a narrative that contains certain teenagers transforming into wolves. However, after watching both Twilight and Wolfblood it is clear that Twilight looks much more realistic than the TV series, Wolfblood. Finally, I unfortunately would not take this title sequence into account for my A2 Media Studies coursework as it is too complex for the equipment available. However I do like the use of a still camera as I believe this will go well with my opening sequence as it seems to be much easier to watch and follow.

My Storyboard

The following video shows the chronological order of my opening title sequence

My drawings do not represent my cast; the drawings are simply to show the chronological order.
My ideas developed:
Grave scene
  • Shot of “DAD” written on the gravestone then camera zooms out to show the surroundings (a graveyard)

OR
  • Shot of “DAD” written on the gravestone then the camera zooms out to show Jimmy placing flowers at his father’s grave

Jimmy and mother together – devastation
  • Shot of Jimmy and mother together (hugging/ showing support)
  • Shot of a tear dropping on the floor

Movement to Manchester
  • Shot of certain aspects that symbolise Manchester

-          The wheel
-          MCFC stadium
-          Town Hall
Meeting the step-father
  • Mother and stepfather arguing as Jimmy watches from a distance

è  Mother and stepfather will be arguing in the caravan in the window and Jimmy will be watching from outside the caravan
Jimmy and stepfather’s relationship
  • Jimmy is curled up in a ball in the corner of the room and the stepfather will be shown as a shadow raising his fist (similar to the image I drew for my storyboard)

Jimmy leaving
  • See Jimmy walking across a field into the sunset
  • Showing feet walking (side on view)
  • Jimmy looks back at his mother who is stood at the other end of the field where she is seen crying

 Shot of his new school

Meeting with the thug character
  • This character is seen laughing at Jimmy and pushing him so that he drops his folders

Meeting the geek character
  • See Jimmy texting another character then the film cuts to the character which Jimmy has texted. He then texts back and the camera reveals his face

Meeting the pregnant teen character
  • Jimmy and the other character are seen talking and having a laugh with each other

The final image
  • All of the characters who feature in my opening title sequence will be shown together
  • Jimmy will stand out to the audiences the most as he is the main character. I will do this by having him stood infront of every other character so that he looks bigger than them
